Lessons Learned from the Golf Course: Post-Acute Care is the Future of Healthcare

I truly enjoy the game of golf.

What a blessing it is to be on the golf course … an opportunity to enjoy nature, wildlife, fellowship and competition. Some of my best business meetings ever and greatest life lessons learned have been while playing golf.

Last week on the course, I had an interesting discussion with a hospital executive about healthcare reform. This gentleman has been in health administration and strategic planning in hospitals for over 25 years. When the subject of Celtic’s Virtual Care initiatives came up, he seemed a bit confused about what the actual product or service is that we are offering.

After I mentioned our ability to assist hospitals, accountable care organizations and insurance companies through partnering, training or consulting in care transitions, disease management, and reducing avoidable hospitalizations, he profoundly, but simply, stated something to the effect of “Oh – Post-Acute Care! Post-Acute Care is the future of healthcare.”

It was interesting to hear the way our services – homecare, hospice, care transitions, disease management – are seen through the eyes of an acute care provider – we are simply, but yet so importantly: Post-Acute Care. And not only that – but the answer to driving Medicare cost down in Healthcare Reform.

What an exciting position to be in right now in healthcare! I look forward to meeting and talking with more hospital executives, physicians, and other healthcare providers in the coming months as we all strive to work together to be accountable to and for our patients in these changing times of healthcare reform.

As one of my favorite golfers, Arnold Palmer, once said, “Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated; it satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the same time rewarding and maddening – and it is without a doubt the greatest game mankind has ever invented.”

Sounds a lot like life – eh? And maybe even the subject of healthcare reform!

Sincerely,
Arnie
