Common Need – A Hospice Poem

COMMON NEED

They give me presence in their hour of grief as if ushering me to the front row of their tragedy.
The lines are few and unnecessary as the cast is pulled out of themselves toward an expanse of common need.
Then they dim the footlights and invite me on stage, and all of us serve in various supporting roles.
It is profoundly appropriate that for this hour there is no distinction of position, or degree of importance, except for the one for whom the play was written.
The closing curtain will punctuate this void, and restore the rest of us to our hierarchy.
As we leave the theater and go our separate ways, we will ever remember… and know, how this star gave the performance of a lifetime to meet this common need – love.
